Fibroids
Fibroids are benign tumors that grow in the uterus. They are made up of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue. Fibroids are also known as uterine leiomyomas or myomas. They are very common, affecting up to 70% of women at some point in their lives, and are most common in women in their reproductive years. Fibroids can range in size from very small (a few millimeters) to very large (greater than 10 centimeters). Most fibroids do not cause any symptoms and do not require treatment. However, some women with fibroids experience heavy periods, abdominal pain, and pressure on the bladder or rectum. If fibroids are causing symptoms, treatment options include medication, uterine artery embolization, and surgery.
If you have been diagnosed with fibroids and are experiencing symptoms, here are some steps you can take:
- Consult with a healthcare provider: Talk to your doctor about your treatment options. There are several ways to manage fibroids, including medication, uterine artery embolization, and surgery. Your doctor can help you understand the benefits and risks of each option and help you decide which one is best for you.
- Treatment Plan: Follow your treatment plan. If you and your doctor decide to try medication or uterine artery embolization, make sure to take your medication as directed and follow your doctor's instructions for follow-up care. If you are scheduled for surgery, follow your doctor's instructions for preparing for the procedure.
- Personal Care: Take care of yourself. Getting enough rest, eating a healthy diet, and managing stress can help you feel better and may also help to manage your symptoms.
- Seek support: If you are struggling with the physical or emotional impact of fibroids, consider reaching out to friends and family for support or talking to a mental health professional.
- Stay informed: If you have questions about your condition or treatment, don't hesitate to ask your doctor. It's important to understand your condition and how to manage it.
